Frequently Asked Questions:
What is the cost to play? We have a special rate for new members. The cost for the first year is $360 which allows you to play as often as you would like.
What equipment will I need? Although there is some equipment available for purchase, you can begin curling with just a clean pair of shoes (preferably ones that have not been worn outdoors), and some warm layers of clothing that allows for easy movement.
How long does a game of curling take to play? Generally our games are eight ends in length which takes about 2 hours to play (except for our 6-end league, which is new for the 2019-2020 season... 6-end games should take 1.5 hours).
Do I have to take lessons before I play? We offer a learn to curl program which will give you some lessons in the basics, and we are introducing a league for newer curlers which will give you more opportunity to learn. However, if you prefer to jump right in that is okay too.
I would like to curl, but my knees (or hips) are bad and I don’t think I can bend down to throw the rock... We have a growing number of curlers delivering with a delivery stick rather than bending to the hack to deliver, so don’t let that stop you!
How does Ontario's Rowan's Law & concussion protocol come into play with curling? Even with diligent safety precautions, accidents do happen in any sport. Our club has a protocol for any falls on the ice where you hit your head, which is reviewed at the start of every season with each league. Additionally, we have a growing number of options of curling headgear (headbands, ball caps, toques, helmets) for purchase by both adults and youth curlers to help minimize the risk of concussion if you do fall.
Do I have to sign up with a team, or can I join by myself? You are welcome whether you come on your own or with friends! In fact, we encourage singles and couples to join, as we look after the creation of teams on the social league nights. You don't need a team to be a part of all the fun!
How many times a week will I be curling? That is entirely up to you! We have league nights on every weeknight and on Sundays, as well some bonspiels (tournaments) on Saturdays. Your membership allows you to play as often as you would like in the leagues. There is an extra cost associated with the bonspiels.
